IGNITE Training Programme

IGNITE represents a world class multidisciplinary doctoral training environment.

Training philosophy

The next generation of environmental researchers will not just deliver ground-breaking research. They will also need to be able to influence and lead interdisciplinary teams, apply cutting-edge technologies and data synthesis tools, and to communicate their work effectively to diverse audiences. IGNITE has created a training and careers programme that enables postgraduate researchers to develop these skills over the lifetime of their PhD.

Training

IGNITE combines whole-cohort (core) training with elective specialist activities to meet the unique development needs of each researcher. Core training is mapped to the Vitae Researcher Development Framework and the UKRI Statement of Expectations for Doctoral Training.

The IGNITE training programme comprises six elements.

1. An Induction programme to introduce the IGNITE Partnership to one another, essentials of doing a PhD, group challenges and networking and socializing opportunities.

2. Core Training, on topics including Data Skills, Media Skills, Leadership, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Public Engagement and Creating Impact.

3. Cross-disciplinary challenges, enabling researchers to work together with expert mentors to create innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

4. Placements, providing experiential learning to aid employability.

5. Advanced training and individual careers guidance, including access to specialist courses and 1:1 appointments with careers consultants.

6. Conferences, seminars and outreach activities, funded by researchersā€™ own Research Training and Support Grants.

IGNITE Researchers also have ample opportunities to participate in training delivered by other NERC DLAs.
