Undergraduate Research Internships Poster Presentation

Last Friday, 5th September, the University of Southampton hosted the Undergraduate Research Internships Poster Presentation.

Through INSPIRE DTP and FLOOD CDT, NERC funded nine undergraduates to participate in their summer Research Experience Placements (REP), and they were all invited to present last Friday.

The REP scheme is intended to encourage students to consider a career in the environmental sciences through funding to support paid summer placements for undergraduate students.

The quality of all the NERC posters was extremely high, with one £50 voucher being awarded to the winner, and two runners-up receiving a £25 voucher each. The IGNITE team had a great time meeting the students and learning about their projects at the event.

This year’s winners were:

  • Winner: Laura Flint – Tracking the microbiome of the water filtration system for the crayfish breeding programme at Marwell Zoo
  • Runner-up: Luc Phillips – Evaluating the impact of signal crayfish upon the trophic networks of the River Nidd
  • Runner-up: Alex Bennett – The beach signature of volcanic tsunamis

All nine participants in the REP scheme will be automatically short-listed for an interview on the IGNITE DLA programme if they apply. We plan to continue this scheme in future years.
